The view

The View

There’s been no change.

Each morning the attendants
lift her out of bed
into the wheelchair,
making sure the ties
that keep her from falling out
are fastened securely.

She hasn’t spoken for weeks.
Has made no sign
she is aware
they are there.
“Good morning, Ruby.
It’s a lovely day today.”

They park her by the window
in case there might be
something left
up there
to notice the view.
But they’re sure there isn’t.

They leave her
inside her crumbling mind
where the view
thru the window
never changes.

  1. A heart-wrenching poem, especially for readers who have witnessed an elder in their family living through a similar situation. Thank you very much, Beverly Ann, for sharing this one today.
